By Paul Walter, a German spotter.

Golden Odyssey was built at the Blohm & Voss yard in Hamburg, Germany. At the same time this famous shipyard (which celebrated a jubilee making their 125th year in 2002) was also busy with Lady Moura. Both were delivered in 1990. In 1995, Golden Odyssey had a refit at the Campbell shipyard. There her hull was lengthened from 76m to 80.5m after a modification of her stern. She also got a fully repaint. From time to time she underwent several small refits at different yards.

Golden Odyssey is the flagship of the Golden Fleet and is sailing seas all over the world with her support yacht Golden Shadow (66.75m) and the sport fishermen Golden Osprey (27.45m). Beside many tenders and oceanographic equipment, from May 1999 onwards a Cessna 208 Caravan Sea Plane for two pilots and eight guests was added to the Golden Fleet and is stowed aboard the Golden Shadow. The owner has considerable interest in oceanography and often makes scientific research voyages with his fleet. Because of that Golden Odyssey has a coral reef aquarium distributed over two decks and a window in the bow for Dolphin-watching.

Golden Odyssey?s very traditional interior with a lot of dark wood and marble was designed by Alberto Pinto.

Above the panorama deck is the former helicopter deck.

The panorama deck is primarily dedicated to the owner. It accommodates the owner?s private lounge which leads out onto a large forward deck that includes a sizeable Jacuzzi and a sun shade that can be raised hydraulically. Behind the owners area is the huge main staircase which connects three decks (an elevator also connects all four decks) and a gymnasium which has been extended more and more over the time.

The upper deck contains the pilothouse, offices and the captain's cabin forward. Right behind is the main saloon which is very traditional in style with large sofas (like on the old Christina) and a piano. Aft of this is the main entry and another small sitting room for relaxing or playing cards, leading out onto the open aft deck where a real mosaic swimming-pool and some dining tables are located.

The main deck accommodates the owner's suite to port and his wife's suite to starboard, both with an en suite bathroom and dressing-room towards the bow. Behind is a double VIP stateroom to port and another owners study to starboard which has direct access to the tender platform. Further back is a small lobby enabling guests to have access to the tender platform too (the door in the hull is visible on the photographs), four twin guest staterooms and the staircase. Right behind is the enormous formal dining room for 18 people and the coral reef aquarium (the glass top of this aquarium is the bottom of the swimming pool on the upper deck above - so as you are swimming, you are thinking that you are in the aquarium). Aft of this is the galley and the crew area. On the open deck aft are the 8,3m and 10m tenders.

On the lower deck is a medical centre with the latest equipment for performing surgery, the crew quarters, the engine room and some storage.
