After thirteen years of good and faithful service, Charade changed of owner. Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft, decided to sell her. Unofficially this yacht was the property of his sister Jody in recent years. Charade is a marvellous Feadship, innovative at launch, whose logo is universally known. Her installation is atypical in some aspects. The color red is omnipresent throughout the interior decoration.
The lower deck is traditional and accommodates a technical room opening onto a bathing-platform, four guest staterooms (aft), the engine room (to the center), and the crew quarters (forward).
The main deck is a variation on the usual layout with a large lounge containing a fireplace (aft), a large galley (to the center), a dining room (first part of the full-beam section) and the owner's suite (second part of the full-beam section).
The upper deck accommodates a panoramic lounge containing a large bar (aft), a large captain's stateroom containing an office (to the center) and the pilothouse (forward) - this has no wheel and instead navigation is controlled with joysticks and a host computer.
The sundeck, of which a large part is occupied by the radar mast, accommodates the toys, some benches and a Jacuzzi.
During a refit, the impressive satcom was added, together with the black paint around the portholes and on the forward full-beam section of the main deck. Originally Charade was completely painted white. We end with a short story : Bill Gates remained on board during his honeymoon in Hawaii. |
