Two weeks or so ago I was in Bremerhaven and made a few pictures of the ex Wappen von Hamburg which is scheduled to be ready converted in the summer of 2009 (it was already dark, so the haul tragic isn’t visible). By seeing the picture you can decide your self if this will come into reality or not. You can see her former mast standing ashore.

I'm trying to get more information concerning a former Swedish navy minelayer called "MUL 11" or "HMS Kalvsund". Any ideas of her new name and where in the worlds she is? How to find information? I've tried all ordinary googel and so on, but no sucess. I think it is her on these pictures : http://www.boatbid.com/...

An update about Mercator II, the superstructure is more and more removed.

Yes it is. The project has no purchaser some months ago, so we can imagine that it's in standby...

Today I made a trip to Bremerhaven. This picture shows Mercator II under conversion (see message 10/01/2007). It is clearly visible in the aft that parts to the superstructure have been removed. The work is done by SSW.

JTTG, it hasn't been too long, they only received the Bartlett about 5 or so months ago. As I understand it she is still functional so I would expect to see her in operation soon.

Posted by JTTG | 03/21/2008 @ 11:20 | Reply

Well that makes a lot sense. It would have been a very expansive task to convert the Bartlett and I think it was just a "pipe dream". I do wonder how the Maritime School can afford to keep her around for long.

Posted by Stabbd | 03/20/2008 @ 17:00 | Reply

I remember what is going on with the Bartlett. She was donated to the Seattle Maritime Academy by the pervious owners for tax benefits. Unfortunately it will not be a yacht refit after all. She will be used to train the academy's cadets.

The MV Bartlett is here in Seattle and being converted to a private expedition yacht. This has been an ongoing project for a few years now and I have no idea how far along they are. Here is a recent picture and a note on some of the vessel's history :

In 1969, the state built a small ferry, the E.L. Bartlett for the Whittier, Valdez, Cordova run. The $3.2 million ferry was built by Jeffboat in Jefferson, Indiana. The 193-foot-ferry had a capacity of 190 passengers and 41 vehicles and traveled at 12 knots. It was the first state ferry to not be named after a glacier. Longtime political leader "Bob" Bartlett had recently died and it was decided to name the boat after him. The Bartlett would operate, primarily in Prince William Sound, until 2004 until it was surplused by the state and eventually sold for nearly $400,000 on eBay.

Here are a couple of pictures of Alucia, recently converted in Seattle. Thanks to JTTG for these first pictures.

Alucia was built as Nadir in France. She was used for scientific campains by the Ifremer. Her conversion began in 2005 for DeepOcean Expeditions. The yacht will be mainly used for research campains, with luxury accommodations for 12 guests. Alucia will carry an helicopter and three submarines. More details on :

Here is another recent conversion. The yacht is named Northern Sun. She's supposed to be an expedition yacht. Her length is 51 metres. She was originally built in 1976 by Narasaki Zosen, Japan. I think she was launched as Hokko-Maru for a research institute, but I have no confirmation about that. Do you know more about her history? Which yard was involved in the refit? Etc...

Yes Johan, Hebridean Spirit (ex Renaissance VI) had also a refit. I spotted her off Monaco during the GP 2007. It gives us a good idea of the future Dabawi (ex Renaissance I), a large and maybe bulky converted yacht.

Here is another interesting link to all the former ships of Renaissance Cruises : http://en.wikipedia.org/...

Posted by Johan | 12/04/2007 @ 12:20 | Reply

There are even more sister ships to Dabawi, there were seven or so ships in that series built for Renaissance Cruises. One of them were even built by Baglietto. One of the sisters is currently with Hebridean International Cruises : http://www.hebridean.co.uk/...

Time to talk again of a large project under conversion in Dubai, the conversion of the mini cruise-ship Leisure World I into a yacht. Her name will be Dabawi. The conversion includes a new layout and interior, and a new design of the superstructure. The work is done by Platinum Yachts, the same company which finished the yacht Dubai. Dabawi is for the moment in the same drydock than the one used for the biggest yacht of the World. I have no precise date for the relaunch. Any more detail about the project is welcome.

I also add a link to a picture of Dabawi when she was Leisure World I. For the Mediterranean spotters, you will certainly notice that she was originally a sister-ship of Clelia II and EasyCruise One, both often anchored off Monaco during past summers : http://www.shipparade.com/...

The Arctic Eagle has been at the Kona Kai Marina for several months now. She looks like a small cargo vessel and carries a sportfishing boat about 35' long on her deck.

It could be interesting to know more about Arctic Eagle. This yacht was often spotted in San Diego, but it's difficult to find information about her. This yacht is a conversion. She was built by Horton Boats in 1990. If you have a picture... And I thank you to confirm and complete the following specifications :

- hull nb. : 256
- LOA : 116.4 ft / 35.5 m
- beam : 32.7 ft / 9.95 m
- draught : 11.5 ft / 3.5 m
- hull : steel
- callsign : WDC7577

Here is a picture of Polarsyssel. As you can see, she had a new paint job (certainly at Peters AG). She had a luxury helicopter on board, and also a luxury tender moored alongside. She was anchored off Monaco during all the Show. All these details tend to prove that she's privately used now...

Posted by Leveller | 09/08/2007 @ 17:00 | Reply

I found Polarsyssel at the Peters AG in Wewelsfleet in June 2007. At that time the call sign changed from cargo vessel to pleasure craft. Peters AG made no announcement about a conversion...

About 02/07/2006 and 01/21/2007, the conversion is nearly finished. The name will not be Deepocean Quest. Deepocean Quest is an affiliated company to Deepocean Expeditions, the owner of the ship. The name will be Alucia. Alucia will be launched in July 2007. Accommodation for 40 persons (14 crew / 6 submersible crew / 20 technical staff and passengers). It's a research ship refit with yacht quality interior.

This yacht is the former Admiralty degaussing vessel Lodestone. Built by Clelands in the UK in 1980 it was originally to have been rebuilt and converted by DML at Devonport in 1998. I'm not sure how recent the pictures are and whether the yacht is now finished.

Venture Marine Pacific is converting a former offshore support vessel named Nadir. Her new name will be Deep Ocean Quest. Nadir was used by the Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea). She was recently remplaced by the Pourquoi Pas? (http://www.ifremer.fr/...).

Some specifications :
- shipyard : Auroux, FRA
- year : 1974
- length : 55.75m
- beam : 11.91m
- draft : 4.78m

It seems that she will keep her 12 tons crane after the refit. As you can see in the following links, a helipad was added to the superstructure. Any more details? Links :
- before refit : http://www.navymar.com/... / http://cmbj.free.fr/...
