The end of January marks the beginning of the Louis Vuitton Summer Series in Auckland, New Zealand. Already we are seeing the arrival of a few super yachts, with more expected to arrive in the coming few weeks. So far few of special note although resident super yacht Ulysses has made a number of appearances around the harbor and surrounding islands and looks to be very active for the coming yacht racing. Alex Jackson's sailing yacht Speedboat has a new look, sporting a red paint job and sponsorship from Virgin Money. After her début performance in this year's Newport to Bermuda race, where she took line honors, she will now attempt to smash the Atlantic crossing record.

Speedboat is a 99 foot Maxi designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian, principal designer at TEAMORIGIN, built in New Zealand by Cookson Boats and launched in April of this year. She has a towering 44.3 meter high deck-stepped mast that was designed and built by Southern Spars. It is the tallest and most powerful maxi rig ever produced by the cutting edge company. The 5 spreader cathedral in-line rig is built from high modulus carbon fiber and is equipped with a complete set of EC6 carbon rigging. Great care was taken to produce an aerodynamic rig, the EC6 rigging is continuous and runs from the deck to inside the mast eliminating the need for bulky external fittings. By eliminating the fittings on the spreader ends they can be much smaller and further eliminate drag. Even the rope clutches for the halyards are internal and handle working loads as high as 20 tons.

After two previous short-lived attempts to break the record this summer, Speedboats future was a bit uncertain. That is until she caught the interest of adventurer Richard Branson and his Virgin Money.

Branson signed on as co-skipper and brought with him his daughter Dr. Holly 26, who will serve as the crew medic, and son Sam 23. "It is real privilege to set sail with such an able and experienced crew as TEAMORIGIN and I'm also thrilled that Holly and Sam have the opportunity to share the experience. The support of Jayne Anne and the Virgin Money team has been crucial in making this record attempt happen and we're all hoping we can add to the recent successes of British sailing. I'm also delighted to be taking on another record attempt - ten years has been too long!" Branson previously set a speed record for an Atlantic crossing in a powerboat in 1986 on the Virgin Atlantic Challenger II beating the 1952 record held by the SS United States.

This latest quest for speed will see Bransons joining the team of owner Alex Jackson and skipper Mike Sanderson along with members of Sir Keith Mill's TEAMORIGIN, the British America's Cup Team . "We are very excited to be teaming up with Virgin Money and Richard." Said Mills, "This is a great opportunity to showcase Britain's America's Cup team with some of our best sailors and a boat designed by Juan Kouyoumidjian, TEAMORIGIN's Principal Designer".

TEAMORIGIN recently celebrated with three of their crew when they took gold medals in the Beijing Olympic games. Ben Ainslie, Skipper and Helmsman for TEAMORIGIN won his third gold and fourth medal overall; Iain Percy, tactician for TEAMORIGIN, won his 2nd gold and Andrew Simpson won his first gold medal.

America's Cup skipper Charlie Barr was the first to claim an Atlantic speed record. He sailed the schooner Atlantic to a first place in the 1905 Kaiser's Cup Transatlantic Race, setting the first recorded transatlantic record. He and his crew of 39 successfully sailed across the ocean to set a monohull record of 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds. Countless attempts were made to beat this record, but it stood for 93 years, the longest standing speed record in the history of yachting, before it was finally beaten in 1998.

In 1998 the record was taken by Mari Cha III, owned by Robert Miller and with Mike Sanderson as Skipper, setting a time of 8 days, 59 minutes and 17 seconds. And again in October 2003, the record that stood at that time was again smashed by the maxi yacht 'Mari Cha IV', also owned by Robert Miller, and again skippered by Mike Sanderson, setting a record time of 6 days, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds, beating the previous record by over 2 days and they became the first and so far the only monohull sailing yacht to cross the Atlantic in under 7 days.

In preparation for his next attempt Mike Sanderson commented, "Having followed all of Richard's adventures, it is a privilege to be attempting this next challenge together on Virgin Money. I certainly believe we have the hardware in place to have a successful attempt at breaking this record. Having been there myself in 1998 and 2003 when Mari Cha broke the transatlantic record, this feels like the right team and the right boat to do it again. For TEAMORIGIN it's great to be able to get out on the water again as a team".

In June 2008, the yacht 'Leopard of London' crossed the Atlantic in 7 days, 19 hours, 20 minutes and 49 seconds, setting a new record for the fastest monohull 'with powered winches' crossing. Although the record books will hand the power-assisted record to 'Virgin Money' if it beats the current record held by Leopard, Branson and his team hope to beat the faster non-power assisted time held by Mari Cha IV of 6 days, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds.

Currently the crew is training out of their base in Newport RI waiting for a weather window to make their attempt.

A new record has been broken by a maxi catamaran. This time it's Gitana 13, the catamaran of the French-Swiss branch of the Rothschild family. The catamaran is skipped by Lionel Lemonchois and his crew of 9. The catamaran has broken the record New York-San Francisco in 43 days and 38 minutes (14 days better than the previous record established in 1998). Link : http://www.gitana-team.com/...

End of the race for Groupama 3 last night. The maxi trimaran capsized a couple of hours ago. The leeward float broke in two. At that time the weather conditions were bad, with waves of 6 to 7 metres and 25 to 30 knot winds. The crew is safe and sound. They were airlifted by the New Zealand Navy. Luckily, the trimaran was just 80 miles off the coasts : http://www.cammas-groupama.com/...

Franck Cammas and his team are trying to win the Jules Verne Trophy. The 105 ft trimaran Groupama 3 is faster for the moment, with an advance of 300 nautic miles. The main objective is to beat the reference time established by Bruno Peyron in 2005 (50 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes and 4 seconds).

More info on his website : http://www.cammas-groupama.com

Unbelievable Joyon!

Even if we're not talking about yachts in this case, it is impossible to have no words about this new record. We're a lot to sail on this forum, to do some regattas, and we followed Francis Joyon during all its impressive circum navigation.

Joyon on his trimaran crossed the finish line in Brest this Sunday, January 20, 2008 at 00h39min UTC+1. He becomes (again) the fastest sailor in solo around the world in 57 days, 13 hours, 34 minutes and 6 seconds. This morning, he broke the record of Ellen MacArthur of 14 days and 44 minutes !!!
