Comments By Mark Drewelow. Mark was the Captain of Dorothea for ten years and did 140,000 miles around the World with her.
Motor Yacht Dorothea, the original Superyacht, was launched in 1967 at Vic Frank's Boat Co. in Seattle Washington. Before her launch, there was a magazine article about her titled "A Superyacht from Seattle". Was this the first use of the word Superyacht? William Garden calls her a "Motorship Yacht" and is one of his favorite designs. The reverse transom with the swim platform was revolutionary for its time and did not become yacht standard until the late 80's or very early 90's. William Garden was 20 years + ahead of the game.
Dorothea is constructed of double planked Alaskan Cedar carvel planking on steam bent Oak frames. Exterior planking is 1 7/8" and the interior planking is 1 3/4". Framing is Oak 2x4"s laminated to make 4x4 on 12" centers. Ceiling planks are 1" Alaskan Cedar. All fasteners are bronze. There is a heavy bronze shoe that runs the length of the keel. The entire superstructure is marine plywood sheathed with fiberglass. Props are 4 bladed and 56". William Garden says "she is a straightforward laminated wooden structure, well-built for long life". The original owner was Howard McGregor, an industrialists living in the Chicago area. Kakki M was built as a replacement for his double-ended, 78-foot Kakki M, also a William Garden design. The new Kakki M spent her first years running between the Caribbean and the Great Lakes.
In 1978 the yacht was sold to Barry Trupin and renamed Tara T. She spent summers in Sag Harbor, New York and winters in the Caribbean. Tara T was famous because of her mysterious "Blue Lights" and she spent most of her Caribbean time at anchor.
In 1986 she was sold to Robert Roirdan. During these years the boat spent summers in Sag Harbor and winter in South Florida. The owners rarely cruised on the yacht, they used her for day trips and business functions.
The current owner purchased the yacht in 1992. He kept the name Savvy Lady until after emerging from a major refit in 1995. The owners world wide interests has allowed Dorothea to stretch her legs and do what she was intended for : extended off shore cruising. During the past 12 years she has been all over the world : SE Alaska, British Colombia, Puget Sound, Oregon, Northern California and the Bay Area, Southern California and the off shore islands, Pacific Coast of Baja, Sea of Cortez, Mainland Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Pacific Panama, Panama Canal, San Blas Islands, Colombia, Venezuela, West Indies from St. Thomas to Trinidad, Bahamas, Florida Keys, Georgia, The Chesapeake and Delaware Bays, Manhattan, Long Island Sound, New England, Spain, France, Monaco, Italian Riviera, Sicily, Ionian and Cycledes and other island groups of Greece, Turkish coast between Istanbul and Antalya, Egypt, Suez Canal, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, Maldives, West coast of Thailand and Malaysia, Singapore, Gulf of Thailand, South China Sea, Java Sea, Indonesia, Australian Coast from Darwin to Sydney, Coral Sea, New Zealand, Tonga, Cook Islands, Society Islands, and more.
In August of 1994 the yacht returned to Vic Frank's for a refit. She emerged better than new in August of 1995. After cruising around the world for 7 years, her next refit was during May and June of 2002 at Baird Boat Co. in Port Townsend Washington. The time required for this yard period was kept to a minimum due to thorough advanced planning. The main focus of the 2002 refit was timber repairs, of which very little was found.
Today Dorothea is in top condition and averages 10,000-12,000 miles per year. She is a unique yacht and is capable of doing what much large yachts do but with minimal logistical challenges due to her 5 person crew and high reliability. Dorothea has traveled about 300,000 miles in her life. Half of these miles have been in the last 10 years, a tribute to her pedigree design and high standard of maintenance. Dorothea is 39 years old and the original Superyacht. She is the perfect example of what a well constructed and professionally maintained yacht is capable of. |
