By Paul Walter, a German spotter.

After two years of construction at the Naval Dock yards in Copenhagen, Dannebrog was launched in 1931 to replace the former Dannebrog - a paddle steamer dating from 1879. Dannebrog is named after the Danish national flag. She is still serving as the Danish Royal Yacht for HM the Queen, HRH the Prince Consort and members of the Royal Family during official visits. Also legendary is the annual Summer Cruise in the Danish Fjords where Dannebrog is often accompanied by the Norwegian Royal Yacht Norge. The yacht has visited nearly all the ports in Scandinavia and others in the Mediterranean, especially France, and the Caribbean. Since her launch Dannebrog has sailed more than 300,000 nautical miles. When the yacht is not in use she is anchored at the old port in Copenhagen and during the winter is berthed in the Navy?s disposal yard in Copenhagen.

During emergencies alerts or war Dannebrog resigns from her duty as a Royal Yacht and serves as a hospital ship. The large crew of Dannebrog is divided into nine officers, seven sergeants and thirty six seamen who are all selected from the Navy. The officers normally serve for two to four years whilst the seamen are all under compulsory military service and stay for one summer.

The bridge is on the fourth deck with the chart room behind. On the deck beneath are seven crew cabins including the Captain's stateroom and the cabins of the doctor and the chief engineer. The officers mess and Pantry are positioned aft of this. In between the two deckhouses are the funnel and four tenders - two very traditional ones, a custom built motor boat and a Diva Viking, the first one ever built. The second deckhouse is divided into two areas by a staircase. The first slightly smaller area is a library and aft of this is the smoking room, a cabin still present on the yachts of this age, which leads out to the upper deck which is protected by awnings.

A staircase from the smoking room leads into a large lobby where arm chairs and sofas welcome the guests for their first drink. Aft of the lobby is the lightly decorated main saloon and aft of this are the Queen?s private lounge to port and the King?s lounge to starboard - both of which have access to the sheltered aft deck. From the lobby the Crown Prince has access to his very own private lounge to port. To starboard there is a huge corridor which passes the funnel and the ships galley and bakery, which have direct access to the dining room, and leads to the huge dining room for more than twenty six people. In front of this are eight guest cabins which have access through the first deckhouse above ; the crew bathrooms and the laundries.

The lower deck contains the Royal Apartment aft, which contains five cabins for members of the royal family, the Crown Prince?s suite and the suites of the Queen and the King. The mid part contains the engine room. The servants and engineers cabins, the hospital and one huge dormitory for all the crew members are forward.
