Comments By Johan, a Swedish spotter.
Originally United Spirit was built as Edi for the Swede Torsten Kreuger for use in the Baltic Sea. She was named after her owner's wife. Upon his deathbed in the mid-60s, he willed the yacht to the NGO "My" which was to use the yacht for rehabilitating drug addicted youths. Already at the time of his death, the yacht was in a sorry state and in the hands of the NGO she deteriorated even further, and on a dark night she was sunk in Lake Mälaren by unknown perpetrators. The NGO had no funds for recovering Edi and by then Sten Kreuger, the son of Torsten Kreuger brought in lawyers. He had found a clause in the will that stated that the donation could be revoked if the yacht was not maintained properly, which she obviously was not. Sten got his inherited yacht and she was raised and towed to a yard he owned. There she was found by inventor Sven Jönsson who heard about her unique aluminium hull and he bought her in 1983.
Three years later, in 1986, after starting a business in Florida, he returned to Sweden with the aim of refitting her into a charter vessel destined for Caribbean waters. The plan failed as the company which was to transport her across the Atlantic went bankrupt, so the plan had to be changed. With some own capital, loans and funding from four
investment companies, Jönsson who had come under Edi's spell decided to rebuild her as a modern charter yacht instead of restoring as she was in such a bad condition. Local naval architects and craftsmen were
hired for the project. They started by removing almost everything but the original midship section of the hull. Rather than fairing the hull with som 10 tons of conventional compunds, Jönsson invented a method for applying a skin of glassfibre reinforced plastic to the hull.
In 1991 when she was finished and Jönsson was ready to commercialize his method, the Gulf War broke out and at the same time the Swedish banks got into difficulties and wanted their money back. The result
was that Jönsson's company went bankrupt and the yacht was sold to an
Englishman who refitted her interior at Southampton Yacht Services to a design by Tony Castro. He renamed her United
Spirit and kept her for 14 years until he placed her on the market in 2005.
Seeing the ads, Jönsson persuaded the Fagerdala company to buy her. They did and United Spirit now serves as a demonstrator for the hull system which Jönsson invented and which is now marketed by Fagerdala
Thiger, as well as operating as a charter yacht based in Stockholm. |
